Last year's Canada Day celebrations in Ottawa were celebrated by thousands of red revellers. This year's celebrations will be attended by the Queen and Prince Philip. (Submitted by Kai Petainen)The Barenaked Ladies will rock out for the Queen and tens of thousands of Canadians on Ottawa's Parliament Hill on Canada Day.
The Toronto-based group is headlining the national celebration's traditional noon show that is this year being built around the visit of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, the National Capital Commission announced at a news conference Thursday.
The Toronto-based Barenaked Ladies will headline the noon and evening shows on Parliament Hill on Canada Day. (Youtube)This year the lineup also includes Quebec pop star Isabelle Boulay, Guelph, Ont., bagpipers The Campbell Brothers and Newfoundland Indie rock band Hey Rosetta! The artists will play both at the 1½-hour noon show and a 3½-hour evening show leading up to the annual fireworks display.
"It's a big year because of the royal visit, so there's many more artists on stage than previous years," said Pierre Boileau, who is directing the show for the first time.
He has previously helped produce performances for Quebec's 400th anniversary and has worked with the Queen on her other visits to Canada.
Heritage Minister James Moore called this year's royal visit on Canada Day "a special honour."
Canada Day celebrations in the National Capital will be largely centred at Parliament Hill and Major's Hill Park in Ottawa and at Jacques Cartier Park in Gatineau. Events at those sites will be carbon-neutral, and free water stations will be provided so participants can fill re-usable water bottles.
The celebrations are organized by the NCC, the agency that manages federal lands and buildings in Ottawa-Gatineau.
