(RCMP)One of the two RCMP officers who died in the massive earthquake that shook Haiti on Jan. 12 will be laid to rest in Ottawa on Wednesday afternoon.

Chief Supt. Doug Coates, 52, was in the UN headquarters in Port-au-Prince when the building collapsed. His body was pulled from the rubble on Jan. 16.

Coates, who lived in Gatineau, Que., and was based at the RCMP headquarters in Ottawa, was the most senior RCMP officer in Haiti. He was working with local police officers, and was promoted to chief superintendent after his death.

The RCMP will hold a regimental funeral service for Coates at 1 p.m. ET at the Notre Dame Basilica church at 385 Sussex Dr. The public is welcome, but the RCMP advises that seating will be limited. The family is expected to attend a private interment at the Beechwood Cemetery after the funeral.

(RCMP)Coates is among the 21 Canadians confirmed by the Foreign Affairs Department to have died in the earthquake, while 148 Canadians are still missing.

RCMP Sgt. Mark Gallagher, 50, was also found dead after the earthquake. Gallagher worked as an RCMP spokesman in New Brunswick and more recently in Halifax before he left to work in Haiti in July 2009.

His body was returned to New Brunswick on Monday, and his funeral is scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
