A program to introduce the pleasures of winter to immigrants to Canada from countries where they have no snow is becoming increasingly popular, according the National Capital Commission.

More than 800 newcomers have taken advantage of the program this winter, more than twice the number who used it last year, according to NCC spokeswoman Caroline Paré.

New immigrants can be out there snowshoeing within days after their arrival in the country, thanks to the 10-year-old program run by the NCC, she said.

The NCC also offers cross-country skiing instruction, and Paré said she has made several excursions with immigrants in the Gatineau Park.

She said they ask frequently about the presence bears in the park, not realizing the bears are hibernating at this time of year.

Newcomers to winter also often forget to bring along toques and mittens, she said, and have to be reminded of the dangers of frostbite.

Participants in the program also learn about conservation, wildlife and plant life, she said.
