Claude Légaré, 49, is wanted in connection with a double stabbing outside a Barrhaven Shoppers Drug Mart on Friday. (Ottawa police) Ottawa police are still searching for a man suspected of stabbing his former girlfriend and another man outside a drugstore in Barrhaven on Friday.
Police issued a warrant for Claude Légaré, 49, on Monday.
Légaré is described as a white male who is five-foot-seven and weighs 205 pounds, with a stocky build and a beard. Police consider Légaré to be armed and dangerous.
In a press release Monday, police said the suspect was wearing a black or dark-blue hooded sweatshirt, a dark baseball cap, light grey track pants and dark winter shoes at the time of the incident.
"In the event that Mr. Légaré is spotted, we're asking people not to approach him but to contact police and let us know of his whereabouts," said Ottawa Const. J.P. Vincelette.
3 injured
At about 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Canada Post employee Brenda Van Leyen was picking up mail at the receiving door of the Shoppers Drug Mart at 3781 Strandherd Dr. when she was attacked by a man with a knife.
A 21-year-old male employee of the drugstore rushed to help her and was subsequently stabbed in the chest.
Another Shoppers employee was struck by a police cruiser while trying to flag down help after the stabbings.
Van Leyen was taken to hospital in critical condition, with stab wounds in her neck, stomach and back. On Monday, her condition was upgraded to stable.
The young man who came to her aid has been treated and released from hospital, while the employee who was hit by the police cruiser remains in hospital with leg and head injuries. The Ottawa police special investigations unit is looking into the collision.
Meanwhile, police said they have received numerous tips from people who believe they have seen the suspect.
Légaré is wanted on charges of:
- Attempted murder.
- Aggravated assault.
- Assault with a weapon.
- Attempt kidnapping.
- Three counts of breach of recognizance.
