The final design of a new naval monument, chosen by the Canadian navy monument jury. (National Capital Commission)A design has been chosen for a new monument to honour the Canadian navy.
It will be installed by the Ottawa River in 2011, at the end of a year celebrating the fleet's centennial, the navy and the National Capital Commission announced Thursday.
A team of artists and architects in B.C. came up with the winning concept.
The centre of the design has a white form that looks like a sail or iceberg, and it also incorporates gold spheres.
The model by Al McWilliams, Joost Bakker and Bruce Haden was selected this month in a competition with an international jury.
Comments from the public, a technical committee and the NCC's advisory committee on planning, design and realty were gathered and reviewed by the jury before a decision was made.
The monument will be erected on Richmond Landing, which is just behind the Library and Archives Building at the west end of Parliament Hill.
