A 14-year-old boy who went missing more than a week ago spoke with friends on Wednesday evening, police revealed Friday.

Justin Rutter talked to friends during a "confirmed sighting" in Ottawa's Vanier neighbourhood, Ottawa police said in a news release Friday. At the time, Justin "stressed that he did not want to return home," the release said.

He was described as wearing a white hooded sweatshirt or coat during the sighting.

Ottawa police said they are still following up on leads from the public regarding Justin's disappearance and are trying to ensure his safe return to his family. They added that they want to tell Justin and anyone who might have had contact with him that he is not in trouble with the police.

Justin parted ways with a friend Oct. 8 at 10 p.m. on Côté Street near St. Laurent Boulevard after leaving his home in Lowertown in the afternoon. He told the friend he didn't want to go home and wanted to stay out late or all night.

His family said it wasn't like him not to call home, and he had never stayed away from home overnight before.

Justin is described as about five feet four inches tall and 110 pounds, with a slim build, short light brown hair and brown eyes. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a brown and white hoodie when he went missing.
