About 200 people lined up outside the Ottawa courthouse Wednesday morning, waiting to enter and hear a judge deliver his decision in Mayor Larry O'Brien's three-month influence-peddling trial.

The ruling by Ontario Superior Court Justice Douglas Cunningham was set to be released at 10 a.m. ET.

O'Brien was charged after his opponent in the 2006 municipal election swore an affidavit saying he had been offered to have his campaign expenses paid and help to get a federal appointment if he dropped out of the mayoral race.

O'Brien is charged with:

  • Pretending to have influence over the government of Canada or a minister of the government in order to gain a benefit contrary to Sec. 121(d) of the Criminal Code.
  • Soliciting, recommending or negotiating an appointment in order to gain a benefit, contrary to Sec. 125 of the Criminal Code.

O'Brien pleaded not guilty when the trial opened on May 4.

The lawyers finished their closing arguments on July 7.
