The judge in the influence-peddling trial of Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien will announce his verdict on Aug. 5, one week earlier than expected.

The reason Superior Court Justice Douglas Cunningham has changed the date has not been made public.

O'Brien is accused of influence peddling during the 2006 municipal election. Prosecutors say O'Brien offered to pay opponent Terry Kilrea's campaign expenses and help him get a job with the federal government if he dropped out of the race.

O'Brien is charged with:

  • Pretending to have influence over the government of Canada or a minister of the government in order to gain a benefit contrary to Sec. 121(d) of the Criminal Code.
  • Soliciting, recommending or negotiating an appointment in order to gain a benefit, contrary to Sec. 125 of the Criminal Code.

Both charges come with a penalty of up to five years in prison.

O'Brien pleaded not guilty at the opening of the trial on May 4. Closing arguments finished on July 7.
