A fire that destroyed a hydro substation in Ottawa's east end two weeks ago has left some of the city's residents steaming.
The fire left around 5,000 residents without power when it ripped through the hydro substation at Shefford and Canotek roads on March 13, but it also briefly gave some a little extra power — in the form of a power surge.
That surge, said Tim Tierney, president of the Beacon Hill North Community Association, has done damage to a number of Beacon Hill homes.
He said that he's surveyed his neighbours and 25 people said they lost furnaces or electronics in the surge.
"There was scheduled work there that day," said Tierney. "So was it a result of something that might have happened when they were working on that substation that created the fire?"
Hydro Ottawa said it's still investigating the fire and that residents' home insurance should cover any damages.
Tierney said residents might still pursue damages from the company once the results of that investigation are known.
"I don't think it's correct for Hydro Ottawa to throw their hands up and say it's not their problem," says Tierney.
