Diamond-shaped orange signs are popping up to mark construction delays and detours across the city, but residents don't have to stumble upon them by chance.

The city has issued a map highlighting the locations of construction work on roads, bridges, sidewalks and sewers this year, said Mayor Larry O'Brien as he declared this year's construction season underway Monday.

"With that construction season comes disruption, delays, and detours to your daily life," he acknowledged.

The map will show the areas to avoid. In addition, warning signs will be posted on roads themselves and will include reminders that the city is paying for at least part of the cost of the work.

The city reports that it has set aside a record $360 million for infrastructure renewal this year, and that a two per cent property tax levy dedicated toward infrastructure will provide an additional $120 million over the next three years on top of the city's existing infrastructure budget.

Meanwhile, the government of Ontario announced Monday that it will spend more than $2 billion on improvements to provincial roads and highways this year.
