The yellow ribbon decals that raised controversy in at least one other Canadian city hall will soon decorate fire trucks, snowplows, buses, ambulances and other municipal vehicles in Ottawa.
City council voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to put the stickers, which bear the words "Support Our Troops," on all City of Ottawa vehicles, as proposed by Rideau-Goulbourn Coun. Glenn Brooks.
However, the motion "isn't a motion of support for the war in Afghanistan," council specified in an additional vote proposed by Coun. Diane Holmes, after Brooks emphasized that it wasn't tied to a particular mission.
"I am not talking about Afghanistan here," Brooks told council. "I'm talking about our troops any place, any time. And I think it behooves us to send a very clear message that we do support and appreciate our troops, our emergency people."
Council also agreed to support police chief Vernon White's decision in August to place the decals on all city police cruisers.
Bay Ward Coun. Alex Cullen voted against Brooks's motion, saying the decals make a political statement, and have no place on city-owned vehicles.
In July, Calgary's city council decided to keep the decals off its city vehicles over concerns they indicate support for Canada's mission in Afghanistan, which not all Canadians endorse.
