No extra money for Ottawa budget, Ontario says

The City of Ottawa should not expect $13 million in extra funds from Ontario that it optimistically included in its 2007 budget, says Premier Dalton McGuinty.
"What is coming their way is the maintenance of a good working relationship. We will always bring lots of goodwill to the table," McGuinty said in response to a reporter's question following a speech in Ottawa Monday.
McGuinty added that the province has already given the city millions in extra money this year, has been taking on costs such as public health from the cities and is currently in discussions with municipalities about how to divvy up joint responsibilities.
When city council was discussing the 2007 budget several months ago, Ottawa staff recommended that the city ask the province for the extra money to cover services that provincial laws require the city to provide.
That money was listed under revenues in the city budget passed in February even though the province did not commit to providing it.
Without the provincial money, the city faces a deficit this year.
