An Ottawa man suspected of killing his sister and wounding her fiancé as they sat in a parked car turned himself in at police headquarters Saturday morning.
Hasibullah Sadiqi, 20, appeared in court Sunday and was charged with one count of first-degree murder with one count each of attempt to commit murder, use of a firearm while committing an indictable offence, and possession of a firearm.
Sadiqi's sister, Khatera Sadiqi, also 20, was killed by a gunshot to the head. Her fiancé, 23-year-old Feroz Mangal, remains in critical condition in hospital.
The couple was shot while sitting in a car in the parking lot of the Elmvale Acres Shopping Centre near Othello Avenue and Pleasant Park Road around 1 a.m. Sept. 19.
The gunman fled the scene in a car immediately after the incident.
"I don't understand any of it," the Sadiqis' father, Ghulam, told the Ottawa Citizen as he was leaving the courthouse Sunday morning. "He is very, very polite and nice to everybody. Just yesterday one of his teachers came to see us and said he is '100 per cent a very nice boy. ' "
The elder Sadiqi told the paper he has not spoken to Hasibullah since last week's shooting but said his son is likely scared: "If you look at the situation, it is very involved," he said.
Police had been hunting for Hasibullah Sadiqi for several days, but would not say why he was a suspect.
Sadiqi's sister had been engaged for six months.
