There won't be a new suburb in the Wakefield district just north of Ottawa, after all.

A developer with plans for 112 condominiums at the foot of the Vorlage ski hill has taken his blueprints to the town of Carleton Place instead.

Jean-Pierre Poulin encountered resistance from community groups several years ago when he built a Giant Tiger discount store on the edge of Wakefield. And he said he has no interest in fighting those same groups a second time.

Poulin had said his development would have transformed Vorlage into a miniature Mont Tremblant, with six hectares of condominiums selling in the $175,000 range.

But a group of Wakefield residents opposed the plan at town council Monday saying it would lead to increased traffic, and what they called "creeping suburbanization."
