The resurrection of photo radar in Ontario could become a reality if cities and municipalities ask for it, Premier Dalton McGuinty said Wednesday.

During a media scrum, McGuinty said he would consider the reintroduction of electronic cameras for speeders if local politicians requested it.

Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion and Marilyn Churley, the MPP for Toronto-Danforth, publicly expressed their support for photo radar earlier in the day Wednesday.

Both politicians said they were eager to see photo radar reintroduced, especially if their municipalities are allowed to keep the proceeds of any speeding fines.

Earlier this week, the province said it would be allowing cities and municipalities to install red-light cameras at intersections and keep the money it collected through ticketing.

NDP Premier Bob Rae introduced photo radar to Ontario highways in 1994. The Progressive Conservative government scrapped the controversial idea a year later.
