The National Capital Commission officially broke ground Wednesday on its mixed-use building development on a property facing Sparks Street Mall.

The retail-commercial building will have 36 residential units, the first residences on Sparks Street in decades, according to the NCC.

The building will maintain the old facades, including the Hardy Arcade building front.

Liberal Senator Mac Harb, the former MP for the downtown riding, helped shovel dirt in a ceremonial groundbreaking event.

Harb said projects like this one are overdue.

Construction on the project should be mostly completed by August 2006.

The NCC also announced it will develop another mixed-use project on Sparks Street that will also include more residential space.

The NCC will be asking for proposals for that project in the coming weeks.
