Nortel, the National Archives and the National Research Council are among the winners in the federal government's latest spending estimates.

The supplementary estimates dole out last-minute cash to needy departments and projects, squeaking the payments in before the end of March.

One of the bigger payouts helps Nortel. The government will spend $177 million acquiring Nortel's Skyline campus at Baseline and Merivale.

The Skyline sale will be a relief to the ailing company, which will receive $90 million of the total next month.

As well, there's a boost for scientific research. The National Research Council is getting $10 million more, most of it earmarked for research.

The supplementary estimates also bear some good news for culture in the coming weeks.

  • The National Archives is getting a repaired roof.
  • The Canada Council is getting another $1 million for artists.
  • The National Capital Commission is getting more than $600,000 in extra operating costs. A NCC spokesperson could not say why.
