SIU probes fatal shooting in eastern Ontario
Matt Roke, 33, shot and killed by Ontario Provincial Police officers south of Ottawa
A 33-year-old man with a history of mental illness is dead after shots were fired by police near a home in Maitland, Ont., just more than 100 km south of Ottawa.
Police say they responded to a dispute at a home on Concession Road 2 near Maitland Road in Augusta Township at about 12:45 a.m.
The man had fled the home and police sent an emergency response team and canine unit to find him but could not.
Then at about 6:45 a.m., police were called back to the home as the man had returned. When officers found him there, he was armed with a knife, police say.
Officers confronted the man and shots were fired. The man died at the scene from his injuries.
Neighbours identified the man as Matt Roke, and said he had a history of mental health issues and lived with his parents at the home where the disputes took place.
Ontario' Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is looking into the incident because police were involved.
The SIU conducts criminal investigations into incidents involving police and civilians that result in serious injury, death or allegations of sexual assault.
