No one has been arrested and police have no suspect descriptions after a shooting in a residential neighbourhood off Montreal Road overnight.

The shooting happened in the 700 block of Cummings Avenue in the Forbes neighbourhood between St. Laurent Boulevard and the Aviation Parkway.

Residents reported hearing shots and police were called. Several bullet holes were found on a nearby van, which was later seized by police for analysis.

Five shell casings from a small-calibre pistol were recovered at the scene.

"At about midnight, I heard five pop sounds that woke me up out of a sleep. It didn't wake my wife up, she didn't hear anything, but I did," said Joe Laframboise, who lives on Cummings Avenue.

"The first thought that came to my mind was, it was gunfire. But I didn't think anything of it, I rolled back over and went back to sleep, and then there was the police at 2 a.m."

Police said a man had earlier admitted himself to Montfort Hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound in a lower leg. That man has since been released from hospital.

Investigators are trying to determine if the two incidents are related.

Laframboise said the neighbourhood is generally quiet.

"All in all it's a quiet neighbourhood. A lot of kids here. This activity is rare, you don't hear it. I haven't. This is the first time, and we've been here for four years now," he said.

"Honestly, this is why we moved out of Vanier, because of certain activities. We just thought here was a more subtle neighbourhood, that maybe this kind of activity wouldn't continue."
