A man who hit an open car door while driving a scooter in the ByWard Market died after being dragged by a truck and pinned underneath it on Cumberland Street, witnesses told CBC News.

Paramedics were called to the scene just after 4:30 p.m. on reports that a man was trapped under a pickup truck on Cumberland Street at Clarence Street.

Meryann Jamil told CBC News she was "in shock" after seeing the driver of the scooter pass by her from the sidewalk.

"There was a sound. A weird sound. But it made sense that it was the sound because actually, later, I realized that the body was being dragged by the pickup truck," she said.

"The pickup truck stopped, the driver came out and then I looked and the body was there."

Police were interviewing witnesses on Monday night and working to identify the man who was killed.

Cumberland Street was shut down in both directions from York Street to Murray Street as police investigated the crash.
