A high-pressure gas line leak on Rideau Street was contained early Saturday afternoon, firefighters say.

Rideau Street was closed in both directions from King Edward Avenue to Chapel Street on Saturday morning, and motorists and pedestrians were asked to avoid the area.

As a precaution, firefighters and police evacuated several buildings on the south side of Rideau between Nelson and Friel streets.

There was no immediate estimated time for the repair work, police said, adding that the leak appeared to be related to construction on Rideau Street.

Enbridge crews remained at the scene into the afternoon.
