Rideau Canal skating season over
After 58 skating days, the Rideau Canal is now closed for the season.
The National Capital Commission announced the end of the 44th skating season on Tuesday evening after a warm, sunny weekend.
The first section of the skatewayopened on Dec. 31, meaning the skating season lasted over a span of 71 days, 58 of which were open for skating.
The official @NCC_Skateway Twitter account tweeted late Tuesday the average length of the skating season over the last five years has been 50 days, about 42 of which were open for skating.
The last time the canal opened for skating before New Year's Day was in 2004, when it opened Dec. 28.
