RCMP vehicle, car crash in front of Supreme Court

An RCMP vehicle and a car collided in front of the Supreme Court of Canada after a short police pursuit. The RCMP said officers believed the car they were chasing was stolen.

RCMP say they were pursuing what they believed to be a stolen car when the crash occurred after 3:30 p.m. in front of the Supreme Court at 301 Wellington St.

Six people in their 20s were inside the car. A 20-year-old female passenger suffered a severe, life-threatening head injury and four other passengers suffered minor injuries, police said. The driver of the vehicle was assessed on scene but refused to go to hospital.

Police said the driver was arrested and taken into custody.

A 47-year-old male RCMP officer also suffered minor injuries.

Ottawa police closed Wellington between Bank and Lyon streets for the RCMP investigation, which was expected to last into Sunday evening.

Ottawa police are investigating. Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is not involved, as they only investigate incidents involving police forces under provincial jurisdiction, which does not include the RCMP.
