An RCMP officer found shot inside a building in downtown Ottawa on Thursday has died.

Police and paramedics were called to 33 Metcalfe St. for a medical call at 8:55 a.m. ET.

First responders found the officer inside the building after he had apparently shot himself. He died in hospital, police said.

In a statement to RCMP members, Commissioner Bob Paulsen identified the officer as Const. Jean-Pascal Nolin, a general protective policing member at the RCMP's national division in Ottawa.

Nolin, who joined the force in 2005, had a spouse and two children, Paulsen said.

"While the exact circumstances of the incident have yet to be determined, the Ottawa Police Services continues to investigate," Paulsen wrote.

"We are committed to supporting Constable Nolin's family and his colleagues during this very difficult time. On behalf of us all, I offer my sincerest condolences."

The shooting was not related to the officer's duties, according to the RCMP's Gilles Michaud, commanding officer of the national division.
