Ottawa police say toxicology results show an Ottawa woman in a medically induced coma did not have medical issues because of tainted drugs.

Police said Wednesday the results show the 20-year-old took MDMA at a "rave event" before experiencing the liver problems that sent her to hospital.

They said it does not appear the drugs were tainted with any other substance.

She is expected to survive, but the fact she’s in a coma means police haven’t been able to interview her to learn more.

Ottawa police said it could be three to six months before they get toxicology results on a 19-year-old Montreal woman who died at another Ottawa rave event after taking drugs she bought in Montreal.

Ottawa’s associate medical officer of health said last week about 40 people die from overdoses every year, most of which are unintentional.

  • A previous version of this story said about 40 people die from ecstasy overdoses every year, most of which are unintentional. The 40 overdose cases are overall, not due to ecstasy alone.
