A 23-year-old man with serious injuries was rescued from the eighth-floor unit by firefighters, who carried him down the stairs to waiting paramedics.

The fire happened at 311 Bell St. S., near Highway 417 and Bronson Avenue, at about noon.

The man was first spotted on a balcony, according to fire department spokesman Marc Messier. Firefighters managed to reach him from inside the building.

He was taken to hospital in serious condition with smoke inhalation and other injuries.

No one else was in the apartment.

Heavy smoke had to be ventilated from floors six through nine.

The fire caused about $60,000 in damage to the building and its contents.

"Although most of the damage was contained to the main unit, the hallway and three unit doors did sustain some damage," according to a fire department news release.
