A fire has destroyed a workshop in south Ottawa.

Emergency crews responded to the scene of the blaze just before 4 p.m. Monday at 1579 River Road, just past Long Island and Mitch Owens Road.

After observing propane tanks inside the wood shop, firefighters retreated to deal with the fire from a distance.

They later found two tanks, each weighing 200 pounds, as well as other tanks.

Ottawa fire services spokesman Marc Messier tweeted the structure collapsed at about 4:15 p.m. The fire was contained at about 5 p.m as flames were stopped before spreading to the nearby brush.

The total damage is estimated at $50,000. There are no injuries and the cause is under investigation.
