A construction worker is in hospital after he fell nine metres to the ground while in the basket of a cherry-picker lift, Ottawa paramedics say.

Paramedics responded to an industrial accident at 2:41 p.m. Wednesday on St. Laurent Boulevard near Walkley Road.

They treated a 45-year-old man for serious fractures to his legs, as well as internal injuries.

He was in a basket atop the double-armed cherry-picker lift when the basket collapsed, paramedics said.

The worker was taken to hospital in serious condition.

The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating.
