A robbery suspect died after a shootout with police in Ottawa's east end on Friday.

The shooting occurred after several police officers were sent to a reported armed robbery at the TD Bank on Montreal Road just after 7 p.m. ET.

Officers spotted a male suspect fleeing the area on foot and a "number of shots were fired," police said in a release Saturday.

The man, reported to have been 24 years old, hasn't been identified. Witnesses said he was wearing a mask.

The man was struck at least once, police said. Emergency Medical Services was called, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ontario's Special Investigations Unit, a civilian agency, is investigating the shooting, as it does every time police officers are present in cases where injuries or death occur.
