Family, friends and classmates are mourning a 14-year-old Ottawa girl who died in a rollover near Watertown, New York, on Sunday.
Carine Rabay was a Grade 8 student at Frank Ryan Catholic Intermediate School. Her friends are spreading the word on social media to wear pink Tuesday in her honour.
School principal John Pedari wrote in a letter to parents on Monday that students and staff are in shock over the loss.
The Ottawa Catholic School Board also issued a statement, saying the school community is praying for Carine and her family.
The girl was travelling with four family members on Interstate 81 at around 4 p.m. on Sunday when their SUV went off the road, struck a guardrail and rolled down a steep embankment, New York State Police said.
Carine, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene.
A 44-year-old woman and nine-year-old girl were airlifted to hospital in Syracuse. The 50-year-old driver and 77-year-old front-seat passenger were taken to hospital for treatment and later released.
