Ontario Provincial Police have called off the search for a missing canoeist in Carson Lake, south of Algonquin Park.

Michael Hinsperger, 57, was last seen Thursday afternoon, heading out on the lake in a canoe, police said.

The lake is in Madawaska Valley Township near the village of Barry's Bay, Ont., about 200 kilometres west of Ottawa.

Hinsperger's canoe was found overturned in the lake Friday, police said.

Over the weekend, search dogs, helicopters and diving teams were brought in to look for Hinsperger.

The OPP confirmed to CBC News on Monday that the search was over.

Police began looking for Hinsperger after his family contacted the OPP's Killaloe detachment. Police have not revealed Hinsperger's hometown.
