Ontario's Special Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal motorcycle crash, which followed a police pursuit, after the bike was struck heading the wrong way on Highway 401.

Ontario Provincial Police say an officer tried to stop the motorcycle driver just after midnight Monday while it headed westbound on Hwy. 401 near Belleville.

When the driver did not stop, police said the officer from the Napanee detachment began to pursue the suspect vehicle on the highway.

The motorcycle then exited the westbound off ramp and re-entered the 401 eastbound heading the wrong way. That is when the officer stopped the pursuit, police said.

The motorcycle then struck an eastbound vehicle a short time later.

The motorcycle driver died at the scene, while the driver of the vehicle was treated by paramedics at the scene but released soon after.

The SIU invoked its mandate and it is currently investigating. The SIU investigates circumstances involving police and civilians that result in serious injury or death.

Hwy. 401 eastbound remains closed between Highway 62 and County Road 1 with detours in place.
