Hospitals with red markers have daily rates of $13 or more. Blue markers indicate hospitals with parking fees of $4 to 5. Green markers indicate hospitals with fees of $3 or less per visit.

A Canadian Medical Association Journal editorial says Canadian hospitals should do away with hospital parking fees, arguing they add avoidable stress to patients.

Dr. Rajendra Kale, the journal's editor in chief, wrote Monday "those opposed to scrapping parking fees for patients need to recognize that such fees are, for all practical purposes, user fees and a barrier to health care."

"I think that parking fees can — and sometimes do — interfere with the quality of the interaction physicians have with patients," Kale said in an interview.

But as the above map of Eastern Ontario shows, not all hospitals charge the same amount. Not surprisingly, Ottawa, Belleville and Kingston hospitals are charging the highest rates, while rates in hubs like Cornwall, Brockville and Renfrew are higher than those in rural destinations.
