A 23-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the head drove himself to an Ottawa hospital on Wednesday night, police say.

The Ottawa police guns and gangs unit is investigating after a man, who had been shot in the head, drove himself to The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus on Wednesday night. (CBC)

The incident happened between 9:30 p.m. and 10 p.m. ET.

The man was shot in his Honda Civic, but managed to drive himself to the front doors of the emergency unit at The Ottawa Hospital's Civic campus on Carling Avenue.

A bullet was removed from the back of his head and he was later released from the hospital, police said.

Police canvassed the Heatherington neighbourhood in south Ottawa after learning the man told hospital staff the shooting happened near Gateville Private, off Walkley Road, near Conroy and Albion roads.

Officers found no evidence of a shooting there, but continue to investigate the possibility it occurred in the area.

The victim is not co-operating with police.

The guns and gangs unit is investigating.
