Three people are facing charges after a man was stabbed during a fight between two groups of people on Preston Street early Sunday morning.

It happened near the corner of Young Street just south of Gladstone Avenue just after 1:30 a.m.

A 25-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman were sitting together on a bench when three other people walked by: two women and a man, Ottawa police said.

A verbal argument turned into a physical fight between the two groups.

The 25-year-old man who had been sitting on the bench was stabbed in the upper torso. The suspects then stole the 28-year-old woman's purse and fled in a vehicle, police said.

The man was taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

The three suspects were later arrested.
