A 31-year-old man was taken to hospital in critical condition Wednesday night after being found underwater without vital signs at the Walter Baker Sports Centre in Barrhaven.

The man was spotted at the bottom of the pool by lifeguards, paramedics said. By the time he was pulled out, he was believed to have been underwater for about two to four minutes.

A 911 call was made at 7:26 p.m. and staff at the sports centre administered CPR, then a shock from a public defibrillator.

Paramedics arrived about eight minutes later.

The man regained a pulse and was taken to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
