A 23-year-old man suffered minor injuries after he jumped from a window to escape an east Ottawa house fire on Wednesday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Marc Messier said they were called to a home at 1292 Dussere Street in Orleans around 4:30 p.m.

The man had just returned home from work and was asleep when the fire broke out in the kitchen, according to Messier. He jumped from a second-storey window onto the garage to get out.

He was treated for minor cuts and scrapes by firefighters before being handed over to paramedics, then taken to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Messier said two adults and two pets will be displaced because of the fire, which at an estimated $300,000 damage will likely leave the home a total loss.

The injured man's 26-year-old sister, the second person who lived there, was at work at the time of the fire, Messier said.

The Salvation Army and Red Cross have been contacted to help.
