The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating after a man fell nearly four metres and died at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa.

Ottawa police and paramedics received a call about the incident at around 10:20 a.m. Tuesday.

Paramedics said the man, who was in his 50s, died at the scene from traumatic head injuries after falling off a concrete wall.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate the man, but his injuries were too severe.

The gallery said  the man was "a contractor who was completing regular maintenance on the grounds."

"We extend deepest sympathies to the worker’s family, his colleagues, and friends," said Josée-Britanie Mallet, who speaks for the gallery, in a written statement.

"We are collaborating fully with the appropriate authorities that are investigating this tragic accident. Accordingly, we will not comment further at this time."                  

The gallery advised that the indoor parking entrance is closed until further notice.
