An 82-year-old man is dead after a bedroom fire in Rockland, east of Ottawa.

Pierre Sabourin, the fire chief in Clarence-Rockland, said firefighters responded at about 5:50 a.m. when they received a call from the victim’s wife.

She told police there was a small fire in her husband’s bedroom in condo unit 304 at 2925 Laurier St. in Rockland.

When firefighters arrived, they found the fire was almost extinguished and they quickly knocked it down.

Paul-Emile Simard was found without vital signs and he was later pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

The wife was taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s office and Ontario Provincial Police in Rockland are now investigating.

Rockland is about a 30-minute drive east of Ottawa.
