An Ottawa man has been arrested and charged after nine robberies across the city in November and December.

Erba Beyecha, 23, faces more than 40 charges, including nine counts each of robbery with an offensive weapon, wearing a disguise to commit an offence and using an imitation firearm during an offence.

Police said on Dec. 27 at 4 p.m. a man carrying a handgun walked into a gas station along the 3700 block of Fallowfield Road, demanded cash and fled with some money.

A witness followed the man, watched him get into a vehicle and drive off, and then reported it to police.

The suspect was arrested a short time later and police said they recovered an imitation handgun in the vehicle.

In addition to the Dec. 27 robbery, the suspect was also charged in connection with eight similar robberies from Nov. 21 to Dec. 24 at convenience stores, gas stations and banks across the city.

The suspect appeared in court Dec. 29 and remains in custody until his next court appearance on Jan. 4.
