An Ottawa man charged with first-degree murder in the death of his mother last year has been declared mentally unfit to stand trial.
René Goudreau underwent a psychiatric assessment at the Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre soon after he was charged.
Goudreau's mother, 53-year-old Lucie Goudreau, was found dead after a fire in her main-floor apartment at 90 Woodridge Cres. on Nov. 27.
A Royal Ottawa Mental Health Centre psychiatrist has judged that René Goudreau doesn't understand the charge against him, doesn't understand the court process and is unable to give his lawyer, Douglas Baum, guidance on how to proceed with the case.
In court Friday, Goudreau was ordered to spend another 60 days being treated at the mental health centre, to determine if he can be made fit to stand trial.
His next court appearance is scheduled for March.
