Man accidentally shoots girlfriend with rifle, police say
Woman, 18, released from hospital Thursday night after single gunshot wound to left arm
An 18-year-old man will be charged this afternoon after accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the arm on Thursday night, police say.
It happened just after 9 p.m. in a house on Twin Elm Road, between Old Richmond Road and Brophy Drive.
Sgt. Ken Bryden of the guns and gangs unit said it appears the man didn't know the rifle was loaded.
He was handling the rifle when he accidentally shot his 18-year-old girlfriend once in the left arm.
She was taken to the Queensway Carleton Hospital by the people living in the house, and was released later Thursday night. Her injuries weren't serious.
The man was arrested at the hospital and he remained in police custody this morning.
Sgt. Seth Curtis said he'll be charged this afternoon with careless use of a firearm and possession of a firearm without a licence.
Two long guns were seized by police from the scene on Twin Elm Road. Curtis said police will be executing a search warrant at the home today to retrieve the bullet, which may be lodged in a wall.
