A downtown block of Laurier Avenue West has reopened after it had been closed earlier Friday morning because of a gas leak.

About 1,000 workers at 340 Laurier Ave. W. were either relocated or sent home for an early weekend after some 15 floors of the building were evacuated.

Laurier was closed between Bank and Kent Street but has since reopened. The building remains closed.

Possible gas leak

The Ottawa fire department was called to 340 Laurier just after 9 a.m. after people in the building and area smelled gas.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesman Marc Messier said there were boiler repairs on the roof of the building which may have been the cause of the leak, and said firefighters were checking all the floors to ensure the leak is not elsewhere. The boiler has been shut down.

Firefighters have since handed the building back to the property owners.

The building is home to the national headquarters of Correctional Service of Canada and also houses other employers, including Public Safety Canada.
