The owner of a cement plant west of Kingston, Ont., has pleaded guilty in connection with a work-related death in August 2008.
A 34-year-old man died after falling off a platform while installing bricks on the ceiling of a kiln at Lafarge Canada's plant in Ernerstown, Ont. The worker tumbled off the platform while it was being adjusted. A part of the rig also fell, fatally crushing the fallen worker.
A sign on the platform said workers should not be on the platform while it was being moved. A judge fined Lafarge Canada Inc. $350,000 for failing to take the reasonable precaution of ensuring workers weren't on the platform while it was being adjusted.
