A father and his teenage son are safe after an explosion and fire destroyed their western Quebec home late Sunday night.

L’Ange Gardien fire crews were called to the home on Pierre Laporte Road by a neighbour around 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

MRC des Collines police said the father and his 14-year-old son were woken up by an explosion in their garage and got out of the house safely.

The home, valued around $170,000, was destroyed by fire, with the fire department on scene much of Monday morning.

The cause is still under investigation but police said they believe it was accidental.

L’Ange Gardien is just outside Gatineau city limits, about 25 kilometres east of downtown.
