An Ottawa woman who pleaded guilty to stabbing an Ottawa man to death in 2011 has been sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Jennifer Bird was initially charged with one count of first-degree murder in the death of Simon Hubbard, who was stabbed in his New Edinburgh apartment on Jan. 1, 2011 and bled to death just outside.
She pleaded guilty to manslaughter on Tuesday and was sentenced to 12 years in prison minus four years and 32 days for time served.
The Crown had been seeking a 14-year sentence minus time served, with lawyer Paul Attia calling her a "stabaholic."
Bird has been in custody since her arrest Jan. 2, 2011. Before that, she had three previous convictions for assault with a weapon.
Bird was 26 years old at the time of the stabbing and had been living in an emergency shelter for people with addictions or mental health issues.
The CBC's Evan Dyer said Bird had no visible reaction when the sentencing was read in an Ottawa courtroom.
