Inquest set for Ottawa teen killed in school explosion
Eric Leighton, 18, was killed while making a barbecue in shop class in May 2011
A two-week inquest into the death of an Ottawa student during a shop-class explosion is scheduled to begin in March, the deputy chief coroner announced Friday.
Eric Leighton, 18, was killed on May 26, 2011 at Mother Teresa Catholic High School.
He had been using a hand grinder on a steel drum as part of a project to make a barbecue when a spark ignited.
Leighton was killed and other students were injured.
Dr. William J. Lucas announced in a news release Friday the inquest is expected to hear from 14 witnesses to examine the circumstances surrounding Leighton's death. A jury will be asked to make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
The inquest is scheduled to begin on March 24.
