Highway 148 bypass opens around sinkhole in west Quebec
Sinkhole formed in road on Wednesday, closing highway for 2 days
Quebec's Ministry of Transportation has opened a bypass around a giant sinkhole on Highway 148, west of Gatineau, which allows one lane of traffic to flow.
On Wednesday morning, a portion of the road collapsed in Luskville, Que., between Nugent and Alary roads.
Water in a culvert below was blocked on one side and heavy rain caused the erosion, leaving a sinkhole that's 10 metres wide by 10 metres deep.
The temporary single-lane bypass is on the shoulder of Highway 148 around the sinkhole.
The complete fix of the highway sinkhole and the culvert is expected to start on July 14 and take four to six weeks.
