A 28-year-old man is dead after the car he was driving on Boulevard du Plateau hit a tree.

Gatineau police said the collision happened at about 1:15 a.m. Tuesday.

The west-bound vehicle was travelling at a high speed when it hit a tree in the median.

The driver, who has been identified at Derek Tighe, was transported to Hull hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the collision.

Police said the man was a Gatineau resident originally from Ottawa.

Boulevard du Plateau was closed in the morning as police investigated and city crews removed the vehicle, but it was reopened in both directions.

Residents told CBC News they are worried about consistent speeding along Plateau.
