Three people were taken to hospital in serious condition after a head-on crash on Highway 50 in Gatineau, paramedics say.

The collision forced one of the two vehicles up onto the median, where it hung precariously over the scene. (CBC)

The crash happened at about midnight near Saint-Louis Street.

Gatineau police said a woman, 72, was driving the wrong way as she crossed the Pont des Draveurs bridge.

Police and firefighters were the first to arrive at the crash site, according to Ottawa paramedics, who were called in by Gatineau paramedics. The collision forced one of the two vehicles up onto the median where it hung precariously over the scene.

All three patients were immobilized and taken to hospital in serious but stable condition.

The elderly woman suffered head, neck, chest and back injuries. In the second vehicle, the 42-year-old man behind the wheel suffered similar injuries. A woman, 40, riding in the passenger seat suffered neck, chest and back injuries.
